Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co, to give it its full name, is a private German electronics company, which produces a wide range of products for both the consumer and business markets. The product range includes microphones, headphones, telephone accessories and avionics headsets.

The company was founded in 1945, just after World War II, by Fritz Sennheiser (1912–2010), a graduate of the University of Hannover in a laboratory called Laboratorium Wennebostel in the village of Wennebostel, and was originally called Labor W after the place of work. Its first product was a voltmeter. In 1946 the company started producing microphones and later expanded its range to include headphones and other pieces of equipment. By 1958, the company had 250 employees and was renamed ‘Sennheiser Electronic’. It became a limited partnership (Kommanditgesellschaft) in 1973. In 1980, the company started to produce aviation headsets with Lufthansa as its major customer. The wireless microphones appeared in 1981. In 1982, Fritz Sennheiser retired leaving his son, Jörg Sennheiser, as manager.

Sennheiser now has 2,100 employees and has factories in Burgdorf in Germany, Tullamore in Ireland and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Research and Development facilities are located in Germany and Palo Alto, California. The company has sales branches in the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, India, Singapore, Canada, Mexico and the USA. Its product range includes microphones, aviation headsets, multimedia headsets, micro-hifi systems, surround sound amplifiers and conference and information systems.

Sennheiser’s biggest selling line is the Sennheiser headphone. They have the largest market share in the headphone and earphone range. Their array of products covers everything from ear buds to sports headphones for jogging and cycling, through to full size Hi-Fi models. They supply specialist headphones for helicopter and jet pilots, and the family headphone for domestic use.

Sennheiser are undoubtedly market leaders, but you may ask are their products the best. In my experience they are very good indeed, hard wearing, with first-rate sound quality even with the cheaper models in the range. Sennheiser products are characterised by meticulous attention to detail. Rubberized speaker parts are hermetically sealed at the seams where water could infiltrate. The headphones have soft rubber earpieces for maximum comfort. No item leaves the factory until it has been through the most scrupulous quality control. I find the prices affordable and good value for money. But when buying, take care! There are many fake Sennheiser models available. I have seen cheap so-called Sennheiser headphones offered at knock down prices. They look like the real thing but when you try them out, the sound quality is rubbish. So always buy from a reputable high street store or on the Internet where your credit card purchases are protected.
